Baoli Rohtas Fort

Baolis are deep level step wells constructed by building a staircase into the earth. There are two major baolis at Rohtas Fort, one near the Kabuli Gate and another near the Tulla Mori Gate.

The Kabuli Gate Baoli contains 60 steps leading down to the water with small side chambers which may have been intended as bathing chambers for the royal family or high-ranking members of fort's command. The deeper baoli, shown here, has 148 steps and leads into a considerable distance into the earth.
